Pathways Explained

Pathways Explained

International healthcare and study pathways differ by destination. This guide explains the main stages, regulators and common terms for the United Kingdom, Germany, the USA, Georgia, Poland, Canada and other European destinations—so you can understand what to verify before choosing your next step.

Find Your Pathway

United Kingdom Healthcare & Study Pathways

Choose a UK study or professional route → meet the relevant course-entry or regulator requirements → provide accepted English-language evidence where required → complete the applicable registration, employment and visa stages. Doctors should check GMC requirements; nurses should check NMC requirements.

Germany Healthcare & Study Pathways

Choose a university programme or healthcare profession → check admission or professional recognition with the relevant authority → meet the applicable German-language and professional requirements → complete the appropriate visa and relocation stages. Healthcare professions are regulated, and requirements can vary by profession and federal state.

USA Healthcare & University Pathways

Choose a university, medical-training or nursing route → meet admission and visa requirements → if seeking professional practice, complete the relevant certification and examinations → apply through the appropriate programme or state licensing board. Requirements are profession- and state-specific.

Georgia Medical Study Pathway

Select an appropriately authorised and accredited medical programme → verify its curriculum, clinical training, duration, language and admission requirements → complete the admission and visa process → after graduation, follow the licensing route for the country where you intend to practise or the applicable return-to-India route.

Poland Medical & Health-Science Pathways

Select a recognised institution and suitable programme → meet the university’s academic, language and document requirements → complete the degree and required clinical components → follow the recognition or licensing process of the country in which you intend to practise.

Canada Healthcare & Study Pathways

Choose a study or healthcare-professional route → meet the institution’s admission requirements or complete the required credential assessment → satisfy the relevant provincial or territorial regulator’s language, examination and registration requirements where applicable → complete the appropriate study or work-authorisation stages.

Other European Healthcare & Study Pathways

Choose the country, institution and programme → verify national accreditation, language and clinical-training requirements → check the professional-recognition rules for your intended occupation and destination → complete the applicable immigration, registration and licensing stages.

Key Tests & Regulators Explained

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE TEST

OET — Occupational English Test

An English-language test designed for healthcare professionals. It assesses listening, reading, writing and speaking through healthcare-related communication. Candidates must choose the profession-specific version required by their regulator, such as OET Nursing or OET Medicine.

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE TEST

IELTS — International English Language Testing System

An international English-proficiency test used for education, professional registration and migration. IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training serve different purposes, so applicants must check the current test and score required by their institution, regulator and visa route.

MEDICAL SCREENING EXAMINATION — INDIA

FMGE — Foreign Medical Graduate Examination

A screening examination administered by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences for eligible candidates who obtained their primary medical qualification outside India and seek to progress through the applicable medical-registration route in India. Eligibility depends on current rules and the candidate’s circumstances.

MEDICAL REGULATOR — UNITED KINGDOM

GMC — General Medical Council

The organisation responsible for registering and regulating doctors in the UK. The GMC assesses whether an applicant meets the applicable qualification, knowledge, skills and English-language requirements. GMC is a regulator, not an examination.

MEDICAL ASSESSMENT — UNITED KINGDOM

PLAB — Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board

A two-part GMC assessment used by certain doctors who qualified abroad to demonstrate the knowledge and clinical skills needed to practise medicine safely in the UK. Passing PLAB can support an eligible registration application, but it does not by itself grant GMC registration or a job.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION — GERMANY

Anerkennung & Approbation

Anerkennung is the process through which the competent authority assesses whether a foreign professional qualification is equivalent to the relevant German qualification. Doctors generally require Approbation, the full licence to practise medicine, or another applicable professional permit. Language and additional assessment requirements depend on the profession and authority.

MEDICAL CERTIFICATION & EXAMINATIONS — USA

ECFMG & USMLE

International medical graduates may need to meet ECFMG certification requirements, including the applicable examination and Pathway requirements, before entering eligible US graduate medical education. USMLE is the United States Medical Licensing Examination. Certification does not guarantee a residency position or state medical licence.

NURSING LICENSURE — USA

NCLEX-RN & State Boards of Nursing

NCLEX-RN is the licensing examination used by US nursing regulatory bodies for registered-nurse licensure. Internationally educated nurses must apply to the nursing regulator for the state or territory in which they plan to practise and meet that regulator’s education, credential, language and other requirements.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION — CANADA

Credential Assessment & Provincial Regulation

Healthcare professions in Canada are regulated by the responsible authority in each province or territory. Internationally educated professionals may need credential assessment, language evidence, examinations, bridging education or supervised practice before they can qualify for registration. The exact route depends on the profession and jurisdiction.

A directory of medical schools; a listing does not itself mean recognition, accreditation or endorsement. You can search the World Directory of Medical Schools. A school’s appearance in WDOMS does not by itself establish recognition, accreditation or endorsement, so applicants must check the requirements of the relevant regulator and destination country.

An international organisation concerned with medical-education standards and recognition of accrediting agencies. We do not imply it directly approves individual schools unless an official source says so.

The UK’s national agency for comparing international qualifications. You can check how an overseas qualification compares through UK ENIC. A UK ENIC comparison is advisory and does not replace a regulator’s professional-registration decision.

A multi-step examination programme used in the US medical-licensing pathway. International medical graduates must check current ECFMG, examination, graduate-medical-education and state licensing requirements.

The nursing licensure examination used by US nursing regulatory bodies. Passing it is only one part of licensure; the chosen state or territorial board determines the complete eligibility requirements.

Applicants should use its official records to verify the authorisation of an institution and accreditation status of a programme instead of relying only on an agent’s or university’s promotional claims. Check Georgia’s official accreditation information.

Poland’s national agency supporting academic exchange and providing information about the Polish higher-education system and recognition. University admission and professional licensing remain separate processes handled by the relevant institutions and authorities. Read about the Polish higher-education system.

Third-country qualifications normally follow the national recognition rules of the country where the applicant wants to practise. Check regulated professions and competent authorities in Europe.

Common Questions

No. Both are English-language tests, but OET is designed specifically around healthcare communication, while IELTS is a general-purpose test with Academic and General Training versions. Regulators specify which tests and scores they accept, so always check the current requirement for your route.

No. The GMC (General Medical Council) is the UK regulator that registers and licenses doctors — it is not itself an exam. It assesses applicants against qualification, knowledge, skills and English-language requirements, which for some doctors includes passing PLAB.

No. PLAB is one route the GMC uses for certain doctors who qualified abroad. Whether it applies depends on your qualification, experience and the GMC route you follow — always confirm your specific route on the official GMC website.

FMGE is a screening examination in India for candidates who studied medicine abroad and wish to progress through the applicable Indian medical-registration route. PLAB is a UK GMC assessment for certain overseas-qualified doctors seeking to practise in the UK. They serve different regulators in different countries.

They share an abbreviation but are unrelated bodies. The UK NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) regulates nurses, midwives and nursing associates in the UK. India’s NMC (National Medical Commission) is India’s medical-education and medical-registration regulator. Always check which one a source is referring to.

No. A foreign medical qualification does not automatically grant medical registration in India. Before enrolling, students must check the current Indian eligibility, course, clinical-training, internship, examination and registration rules that apply to their circumstances, as well as the official status of the institution and programme.

No. WDOMS is a directory. A listing does not by itself mean that the school is recognised, accredited or endorsed. Applicants must separately verify the institution and programme with the appropriate national accreditation body and with the regulator in the country where they intend to practise. WDOMS explains this limitation.
